What is Cob Building?
Cob building combines wet earth, straw, and sand to dry into a hard and durable surface for walls. The word “cob” comes from old English and means “lump or rounded mass.” Cob is especially good for rounded and organic shapes, creating appealing structures that are difficult with other building materials.
Cob building is one of the most popular natural building methods for a reason. It can be done with readily available materials, it’s easy to learn, and when cared for properly, it can last hundreds of years. Some of the most popular projects include ovens and walls, but cob houses (sometimes mixed with other natural building styles like earthbags) are especially beautiful.
