Our laundry rooms are typically one of the smallest rooms in our homes, yet they are one of our heaviest-traveled spaces. Iโve often wondered: Why is such a well-used area given so little attention? Though I’ve seen the odd wine refrigerator or reading chair in a laundry rooms, most folks go with utilitarian decor.
Most laundry rooms are small, so if you want the best organization and decor, you’ll have to put some thought into it.
First, answer these questions: How is the room going to be used, and who does the room serve? Once you settle on the practical, you can find those extras that will make the space feel like a lovely place to beโor as lovely as you can feel while doing laundry.
Letโs take a look at ways you can take advantage of the space you have and the most essential items to considerโplus a few creative, fun features you may not have seen before.
Pull-Out Drying Rack
Full disclosure, on laundry day, the chairs in my formal dining room double as a drying rack. I know Iโm not the only one. But itโs frustrating trying to find room to hang your delicates and jeans. This pull-out drying rack would solve that problem while keeping damp sweaters away from the china.
Fold-Down Drying Rack
If you donโt have drawer space, you may have space on the wall for a fold-down drying rack instead.
Hidden Drawers
The laundry room has a tendency to get a bit messy; after all, weโre dealing with dirty clothes in there. One of the most clever ways to keep things tidy is by having hidden drawers inside of cabinets.
Hidden Ironing Board
Since weโre on a roll with hidden features, letโs consider the ironing board. This is probably one of the most genius home design elements Iโve encountered. Ironing boards can be so cumbersome, so having a way to tuck it out of the way and easily pull it out when you need it is simply brilliant.
Ironing Board Hanger
So, admittedly, many of us have no space for a built-in ironing board. However, weโd love a way to have the board out of the way and not taking up so much space somewhere when not in use. A simple DIY option is to install some door hooks on the back of a door or on the wall.
Invisible Rack
This product is ideal for anyone who really needs to maximize space while also finding a way to keep their laundry room tidy.
Retractable Clothes Line
This is a simple DIY project that can make an immediate impact. A retractable clothesline will allow for more space to hang delicates. Skipping the dryer is incredibly energy efficient, too.
Lint Bin
For anyone who puts their lint in the compost, finding a place to put it can be a challenge, especially when youโre in a hurry. Make it a simple process by having a dedicated place to put the lint each time you clean the dryer vent.
Switch To DIY Laundry Detergent
If you prefer all-natural products and arenโt afraid to DIY your own, you can make up a large batch of laundry soap to last through several loads. Put it in an adorable container, and it doubles as cute laundry room dรฉcor.
Add A Sink
Some laundry rooms have enough space for a sink, which makes all things laundry and cleaning-related so much simpler. Consider a utility sink with a nice deep basin for hand-washing garments or dress up the space with a functional yet attractive farmhouse sink.
Storage Peg Wall
A potential DIY project, storage peg walls keep things tidy and out of the way while optimizing whatever space youโve got.
Clothes Rod
Though it may seem obvious, hanging rods can make all the difference. This is one of the best ways to have clothes ready to transfer straight to the closet. You can also keep spare hangers on the rod at all times, ready for laundry day.
Hanging Laundry Bags
Perhaps one of the cutest ways to sort laundry and keep it off the floor and out of the way is in these hanging laundry baskets.
Missing Sock Hanger
Why do our socks insist on separating for a while? Itโs inevitable that when you finally find the runner, the original is nowhere to be found. For any crafty DIY-ers, this is a clever and attractive way to keep track of those single socks until they can be paired up once again.

Laundry Pedestal
If youโre a very handy DIY-er, you might consider tackling a project such as this. Rather than buying the pedestals that come with some washers and dryers, make your own that will provide built-in storage space.
Spaces For Our Furry Friends
Perhaps one of my favorite features Iโve begun seeing incorporated into laundry rooms is clever spaces for cats and dogs. I especially love those equipped with a little shower area for muddy puppy feet. Check out this cool feature for hiding cat boxes.
Laundry Room Wall Decor
If you enjoy a touch of whimsy in your home, why not bring that into the laundry room as well?
Laundry Room Caddy
If youโre interested in a product that handles multiple functions, consider a caddy with an ironing board built right in. Not only does it serve as extra storage, but it can easily be moved to wherever you need it, whenever you need to.
