Self-watering planters feature two separate pieces. There’s a planter that you put your soil and your plants in and a reservoir that sits underneath. You fill the reservoir with water, and as your plant’s soil dries, the plants will pull water from the reservoir underneath. As long as the reservoir is full, you won’t need to add any additional water. Sounds like a pretty good deal!

Self-watering planters can save you time and protect your garden from dying while you’re away, but be wary of what plants you choose to put in these planters. Plants that prefer dry, sunny conditions, such as succulents, should not be planted in self-watering planters, as they do not need much water on a daily basis.
