Every gardener has that one plant that seems to have a never-ending thirst. You water it, tend to all your other plants, and next thing you know, the soil is all dried up again! Plants that like (or tolerate) wet soil include mint, snowdrops, canna, astilbe, and calla lilies. This soil preference makes all of these plants great options for self-watering planters.
Self-watering planters feature two separate pieces. There’s a planter that you put your soil and your plants in and a reservoir that sits underneath. You fill the reservoir with water, and as your plant’s soil dries, the plants will pull water from the reservoir underneath. As long as the reservoir is full, you won’t need to add any additional water. Sounds like a pretty good deal!
Self-watering planters can save you time and protect your garden from dying while you’re away, but be wary of what plants you choose to put in these planters. Plants that prefer dry, sunny conditions, such as succulents, should not be planted in self-watering planters, as they do not need much water on a daily basis.
Whether you have a few small plants around the house or a large garden in the backyard, self-watering planters can save you time, water, and stress in the long run. Check out our list of some of the best self-watering planters.
