According to the International Forum on Globalization, Charles and David Koch are America’s single largest source of private money for attacks against environmental protections. They have spent over $643 million to block or rollback legal protections for clean air, clean energy, clean water, and other environmental issues through sketchy scientific research, lobbying lawmakers, contributing to electoral candidates’ campaigns, media manipulation, etc. Source: kochcash
Petroleum coke (a byproduct of tar sands refining) has been irritating numerous residents in both Chicago and Detroit. Koch Carbon is storing enormous quantities of petroleum coke on the banks of Chicago’s Calumet River and Michigan’s Detroit River. A routine aerial inspection found Koch Pipeline Co. spilled 400 gallons of crude oil in Texas in late October, 2013.
Environmental Charges Against Koch
November, 2014: the city of North Pole, Alaska filed suit against refinery owner Flint Hills Alaska Resources: “During the times that the defendants owned or operated the refinery, the defendants caused or allowed numerous and/or continuous releases of hazardous substances into the groundwater located beneath the refinery, and failed to contain or remediate the hazardous substances,” the lawsuit states. “Ultimately, these hazardous substances have migrated off the refinery property and have contaminated the groundwater down gradient of the refinery and within the city, including wells owned by the city and supplying drinking water to the city’s inhabitants. The presence of sulfolane contamination in the city’s groundwater has rendered that groundwater unfit for human consumption and endangers the public health or welfare, or fish, animals, vegetation or any other part of the natural habitat in which it is found,” the lawsuit states. Source: newsminer.com
December 2006: Flint Hill Resources fined nearly $16,000 by the EPA for 10 separate violations of the Clean Air Act at its Alaska oil refinery facilities, and required to spend another $60,000 on safety equipment needed to help prevent future violations. yosemite.epa.gov
May 2001: Koch Industries paid $25 million to the federal government to settle the federal lawsuit that found the company had improperly taken more oil than it had paid for from federal and Indian land. A federal jury found that Koch Industries had stolen oil from government and American Indian lands and had lied about its purchases more than 24,000 times. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
September 2000: A federal grand jury in Corpus Christi, Texas returned a 97-count indictment against Koch Industries Inc., Koch Petroleum Group for violating federal clean air and hazardous waste laws, due to the release of at least 91 metric tons of uncontrolled, untreated carcinogenic benzene. In April 2001, the company reached a $20 million settlement in exchange for admitting to covering up environmental violations at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. Source: justice.gov
March 2000: Koch petroleum which operates a refinery in Rosemount, Minn., was sentenced to pay a $6 million criminal fine and pay an additional $2 million in remediation costs. This is the largest federal environmental fine ever paid in Minnesota. Koch admitted that it negligently discharged 200,000 – 600,000 gallons of aviation fuel into a wetland and an adjoining waterway. In addition, their way of recovering the fuel (a year and a half later) destroyed a portion of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitat. In a separate offense, Koch dumped a million gallons of wastewater with high ammonia content on the ground between November 1996 and March 1997 and also increased its flow of wastewater into the Mississippi River on weekends when no one monitored discharges. These actions allowed Koch to circumvent the weekly monitoring and reporting requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota. January 2000: Koch Pipeline agreed to a $35 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the State of Texas as fines for the firm’s three hundred oil spills (300 million gallons) in Texas and five other states going back to 1990. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
August 1996: Koch’s Sterling butane pipeline had a leak in Lively, Texas, on August 24, 1996. Two teenagers on the way to report the leak drove into the unseen butane cloud, and were killed when the gas exploded and burned. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that severe external pipeline corrosion was the cause of the failure. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

Koch Brothers Oppose Electric Cars
This report from the show The Young Turks explains that the Koch Brothers are backing a new organization trying to stop the rising tide of electric vehicle adoption. This would hurt petroleum producers like the Koch Brothers. The group is likely to run ads attacking the subsidies given to electric cars.

Truth says
I believe I saw a report that stated they hold more environmental and safety awards than any other American company. But don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story, right? Koch Industries and its subsidiaries received 289 stewardship awards over the two years ending January 2011. Their headquarters is the only office building in Kansas to be Energy Star certified. In 2005, Koch’s Flint Hills Resources refinery was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Awards program for reducing air emissions by 50 percent while expanding operations.
Is this a website dedicated to truths about the environment or just a political attack on the conservative Koch brothers disguised as a tree hugging outfit?
DrysonB says
The Employees of the Koch Knight Facilities are liars, thieves, stalkers, uneducated low lifes who think that they are entightled to telling everyone how to live their lives.
I worked for Koch Knight for ten months as a temporary employee, I don’t see why anyone would want to work for them full time to be honest.
While working at KKI in East Canton, Ohio everything was going fine until I was moved to another location within the plant. Within a few days the black employees began harassing me saying that I was dumb, you done, etc. All of which started after they discovered what my online screen name was and began telling me that I could not do what I did on my offtime, that I did not have any faith in what I was supposed to believe in based on their company mandates of what religions and beliefs people are to believe in. My temporary position was terminated after a very nasty female put her hands on me which I took as sexually suggestive. People do not place their hands on your chest if they are greeting you they shake your hand. As A result I filed a complaint with the Koch Knight Supervisor and the temporary agency. As a result I was fired. If I had been her and done the same thing to her hell would have hit the fan and I would have been charged with some type of sexual assault. The employees of Koch Knight in Canton, Ohio are simply drunken degenerates and have the job that they do because know one else wants to work for Koch Knight. Why is that? Because Koch Knight is part of the far right wing nut bags in America who think that they have the right to tell a person who to live their lives away from work and that if what the person does at home might affect Koch Knight then the person is encouraged to not engage in what the person does but to only do what the other employees want her or him to do to brain wash them to be like they are drunken degenerates who have nothing better to do than stalk and harass people because they think that since they work at Koch Knight full time and make more money than a temporary employee then that makes them automatically more intelligent and knowledgeable than the temporary employee.
The Koch Brothers and their employees are sht.

IF the Koch brothers get their way all states will end up like wisconsin. They want to do away with unions, the minimum wage, and stop the funding of SS so they don’t have to pay their share. We are nothing but workers to serve them. If the Gop takes over the working person we suffer. weather your union or not . Unions help pay all healthcare by paying higher premiums. Everyone needs healthcare insurance because if you become ill hospitals still treat you and the insured pick up the tab one way or they other. If u thing Obama is the problem look again. They want to make him look bad as is serves their agenda. They want to get rid of the EPA. Before the EPA was around guyhana river once was on fire in Cleveland. Lets not let them take over with their puppets. Look at Russia today and you will see that here soon.
China just said they like the GOP as they want to just make money and don’t care about human rights.

In this day and age when countless companies are folding one after another, Koch industries continues to flourish and keep tens of thousands of people employed. It is pretty naive to think that the left wing will put out factual based info on somebody that is challenging their Messiah. These brothers have interests in many products true. How many jobs are related to these products? How about their cancer research? It is stupid for liberals to think that men and companies will venture their money and expect no returns. This is what makes the U.S. different from the european countries who have been around hundreds of years longer than we have and are so far behind this young nation.I wish the liberals would start using their brains and get off of the Liberal band box and think about what they say in their responses and read past the headlines before forming opinions. This nation is not like Europe. We are spread out and cannot ride our bicycles everywhere we go. Nixing this pipeline that the Koch Brothers probably support and will undoubtably profit to some extent off of, will cost the Americans hundreds of thousands of jobs and cause the gas prices to rise sharply. When you pay 6-7 dollars a gallon for gas how much buying power will you have on our yearly income then? I guess the response from the liberals will be, I won’t work because it won’t be worth it I will just let the Government support me. This is what is wrong with America now. Thank You Mr. Obama and your socialistic rhetoric and views. The comments against the Koch Brothers is sickening. Yes they will make money. This is what people with money do, but they also fuel Americas engine by producing jobs. How many of the people which their negative responses that use to have toys and a better way of life have much less now? Take a good look at Socialism folks before you buy into it. The big boys with money will always make money. Maybe not in America where Americans will make it for them but possibly China India or other countries labor forces and we will only have these narrow minded liberal way of thinking to blame for it. We are the richest oil nation in the world but we pay hundreds of dollars a barrel for oil from our enemies instead of drilling outs own. We could be a rich NATION with a better standard of life if we used Common Sense and quit letting Stupid Liberals dictate to us. Ever think about Liberal Hollywood? Do you think they suffer when gas spikes at 8 dollars a gallon or Tires are 2000 a set or anything plastic or rubber goes sky high in price? Not on your life. These morons make hundreds of millions or billions on entertaining us. Koch brothers and companies like them make PRODUCTS that makes our lives easier and heightens our standard of living. Hard to live without what the Koch brothers make but entertainment we can live without.

How can liberals be so stupid. Why don’t you boycott all big business products? Yes go back to the 1700s where you make your own products. The Koch brothers are not unique. All big business produces multiple products we use everyday. Research G.E. They didn’t pay taxes last year as a reward for their Obama support. Why don’t the liberal fools comment on them. Oh yeah how about Obamas buddy Soros. Huge in Brazilian oil investments. The Keystone pipeline was vetoed by Obama, why and who benefits? We lose Soros will benefit when we buy Brazilian oil. I would much rather see us buy Oil from Canada our neighbor , rather than OPEC or Brazil.

I am much encouraged by the increasing number of younger people that seem to be intellectually more informed about people like the koch bros., on the whole, than previous generations. The truth is, your country probably has not been run by a pure government by the people for decades! It’s more likely run by something called a corporatocracy to the tune of at least 65%. U.S. presidents at this point are kept on a short lease and congress is composed of individuals who are controlled either by lobbyists or constant fundraising for reelection. In other words, our system is a play being acted out for the american people by well paid actors. It’s an illusion. These billionaire corporate moguls are inch by inch gaining a foothold on how the country and the world is run. If the supreme court and others continue to aid them, boycots and protests will be little more than reality tv entertainment. The citizenry will have to become more enlightened in a hurry.

Disgraceful that these men are so powerful in our democracy that they can buy the government.

@ Lugnut. I’m going to boycott the toilet paper they are associated with, as well as any other of Koch’s products I can avoid. Charmin suddenly seems that more soft and comforting.

I was looking at household items the Koch Bros are associated with to boycott but I don’t use any so i will have to look deeper. These men are making more than enough money that they could easily use some of it to make the world a cleaner healthier place but choose instead dump money into political candidates who will do their dirty bidding.

Stephen Colbert gave me the idea to look for this list. So glad it’s out there. Will be sure not to use any of these products. Going to share this list with anyone with at least one ear!

Koch Bros. trying to destroy the ‘ middle class’? Hilarious.
Eeeeeeverything’s a conspiracy, in the Utopian mind.
Koch Bros. products are dependent on a middle class that will purchase those products.
Only a childish mind which has been manipulated by the class warfare merchants (you know who you are) is ignorant enough to believe such tripe.

…….just this morning, went back to using hemp instead of Quilted Northern.
I just KNEW somebody was ripping me off with that Quilted Northern.
Thanks for letting me know it was the Koch Bros. I just had a feeling…..and now I know. I feel like….like…..like I’ve just been brought into the light…..

Koch-owned Georgia Pacific: a company which practices genuine forestry, as opposed to the Loon-Druids on the Left, who have brought about a state of almost total non-management in the National Forests.
The result: National Forests are turning orange and brown, full of dead timber, tinderboxes ready to burn.
But a typical Loon doesn’t even know this, since he is pretty much urban-imprisoned–mind AND body.
Be proud, Loons. Ignorance is bliss.
And watch out for those SUCCESSFUL people who are always plottin’ agin’ ya.
Hilarious.

…thanks for turnin’ me on to the evil of the profit-making Kochs.
I changed, therefore, from Quilted Northern to my local collective’s brand–HippieHemp–even tho’ it costs three times as much. It’s ‘recycled’ (they wouldn’t lie) and no actual trees are involved, so I had to go wit it.
I am concerned about a coupla things, tho’. A friend of said that some of the hemp used was old growth hemp, and that is going to pi$$ off Gaeia.
But here’s the big one–I’ve just learned that the co-op is actually trying to charge me more for HippieHemp than THEY paid for it. Yup, folks–they’re trying to make a profit. What has this world come to…………
