Mushrooms provide your garden with a unique symbiotic relationship that should be welcomed! Mushrooms absorb water and minerals for the tree, and in return the tree provides the mushrooms with nutrients. When it comes to fallen trees, mushrooms work to aid in the decaying process, by turning the dead material into beneficial, nutrient-rich forest soil.
While most mushrooms are wild and tend to show up in the fall, you can grow your own shiitake mushrooms with just a few simple tools and supplies. To learn more about the vegetative part of fungus, check out our mycelium guide.
