The refineries produce a wide range of transportation fuels for motorists, truckers and the airline industry. In the olefins plants, the company processes natural gas liquids into ethylene and propylene. In the polymers plants, those two products are processed into various forms of olypropylene, which are key ingredients in products such as consumer and healthcare products, packaging and other plastic products. In the aromatics plant, products produced during the crude oil refining process become xylenes, cumenes and other light products. Those products are the building blocks for many other chemicals and plastics.” Source: fhrstage.fhr.com/ehs/certifications.aspx

According to the International Forum on Globalization, Charles and David Koch are America’s single largest source of private money for attacks against environmental protections. They have spent over $643 million to block or rollback legal protections for clean air, clean energy, clean water, and other environmental issues through sketchy scientific research, lobbying lawmakers, contributing to electoral candidates’ campaigns, media manipulation, etc. Source: kochcash
Petroleum coke (a byproduct of tar sands refining) has been irritating numerous residents in both Chicago and Detroit. A routine aerial inspection found Koch Pipeline Co. spilled 400 gallons of crude oil in Texas in late October, 2013.
Environmental Charges Against Koch
November, 2014: the city of North Pole, Alaska filed suit against refinery owner Flint Hills Alaska Resources: “During the times that the defendants owned or operated the refinery, the defendants caused or allowed numerous and/or continuous releases of hazardous substances into the groundwater located beneath the refinery, and failed to contain or remediate the hazardous substances,” the lawsuit states. “Ultimately, these hazardous substances have migrated off the refinery property and have contaminated the groundwater down gradient of the refinery and within the city, including wells owned by the city and supplying drinking water to the city’s inhabitants. The presence of sulfolane contamination in the city’s groundwater has rendered that groundwater unfit for human consumption and endangers the public health or welfare, or fish, animals, vegetation or any other part of the natural habitat in which it is found,” the lawsuit states. Source: newsminer.com
December 2006: Flint Hill Resources fined nearly $16,000 by the EPA for 10 separate violations of the Clean Air Act at its Alaska oil refinery facilities, and required to spend another $60,000 on safety equipment needed to help prevent future violations. yosemite.epa.gov
May 2001: Koch Industries paid $25 million to the federal government to settle the federal lawsuit that found the company had improperly taken more oil than it had paid for from federal and Indian land. A federal jury found that Koch Industries had stolen oil from government and American Indian lands and had lied about its purchases more than 24,000 times. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
September 2000: A federal grand jury in Corpus Christi, Texas returned a 97-count indictment against Koch Industries Inc., Koch Petroleum Group for violating federal clean air and hazardous waste laws, due to the release of at least 91 metric tons of uncontrolled, untreated carcinogenic benzene. In April 2001, the company reached a $20 million settlement in exchange for admitting to covering up environmental violations at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. Source: justice.gov
March 2000: Koch petroleum which operates a refinery in Rosemount, Minn., was sentenced to pay a $6 million criminal fine and pay an additional $2 million in remediation costs. This is the largest federal environmental fine ever paid in Minnesota. Koch admitted that it negligently discharged 200,000 – 600,000 gallons of aviation fuel into a wetland and an adjoining waterway. In addition, their way of recovering the fuel (a year and a half later) destroyed a portion of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitat. In a separate offense, Koch dumped a million gallons of wastewater with high ammonia content on the ground between November 1996 and March 1997 and also increased its flow of wastewater into the Mississippi River on weekends when no one monitored discharges. These actions allowed Koch to circumvent the weekly monitoring and reporting requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota. January 2000: Koch Pipeline agreed to a $35 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the State of Texas as fines for the firm’s three hundred oil spills (300 million gallons) in Texas and five other states going back to 1990. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
August 1996: Koch’s Sterling butane pipeline had a leak in Lively, Texas, on August 24, 1996. Two teenagers on the way to report the leak drove into the unseen butane cloud, and were killed when the gas exploded and burned. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that severe external pipeline corrosion was the cause of the failure. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

Koch Brothers Oppose Electric Cars
This report from the show The Young Turks explains that the Koch Brothers are backing a new organization trying to stop the rising tide of electric vehicle adoption. This would hurt petroleum producers like the Koch Brothers. The group is likely to run ads attacking the subsidies given to electric cars.

Just so everyone knows, in 2008 Koch was included in Businessweek’s list of top 50 American givers. Between 2004-2008, Koch gave $246 million, focusing on ‘libertarian causes, giving money for academic and public policy research and social welfare.’

What’s that cris (Reply #408)? Did you say that between 2004-2008, Koch spent $246 million, to influence academic and public policy research under the guise of social welfare? We already knew that. If you’ve kept up with the news, you’d know that the Heartland Foundation is just the latest such ‘shell organization’ (if you will) to be exposed. (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/feb/15/leak-exposes-heartland-institute-climate et. al.) They were working an an entire set of ‘science alternative’ K-12 modules to teach kids that climate change isn’t something they should worry about because they know that the formative years are important ones.
Anonymous says
Wow, I guess I was behind on the news. It looks like a Heartland Foundation associate also managed to infiltrate Carleton University in Ottawa, to teach a course that was supposed to be about climate change, even though his background is mechanical engineering and climate change denial. So they are going after more than just K-12.

Koch self-reports environmental accidents to the EPA. Charles Koch expects 10,000% compliance with regulations – 100 % of the time by 100% of its operations.
Any company that manufactures the range of products that KI makes and that has revenues of $100 billion per year will have accidents. The naarrow-minded green solution is to stop producing all such products. Is that realistic? How many people who are anti-Koch drive gas guzzlers, I wonder.
It is so easy to point fingers at the other guy, especially when he’s making good money. Making money is hard evidence that he is doing something illegal, or so say the morons.

It is too bad more people and companies are not standing up for Liberty like the Koch Brothers and their great, profit making machine. Now that I know what they make, I will certainly buy more of it. Profit is what gives us such a great lifestyle and separates us from the struggling masses of many years ago. The environment is in great shape and clearly does not require anybody to look after it. Today is another sunny, beautiful day with clean water and clean air. Anybody seeing anything else is delusional and probably jealous of hard working people using the earth’s vast resources to seek a better life. Now you know why the Koch Brothers have spent so much money lobbying congress to get rid of the E.P.A. and end all EPA regulations. They say it has to do with creating jobs but it actually has nothing to do with creating jobs when you look at their record. This group doesn’t even include the bad stuff they’ve done oversees. Oh boy! Not the good guys by a long shot. Notice that most of their problems went away during GWB’s administration. But then again, the only way they got caught was people in the company who grew a conscience and turned them in.

Is there any chance you could develop a nationwide conversion system for cars and trucks to natural gas? I’d convert my Explorer in a nano second if I could. DO YOU have the same opinion of George Soros, who has knowingly bankrupted the Bank of England (thus hurt millions of people ) for his own financial gain with his market and currency manipulation and dealings ??
Yet you believe that the Koch brothers are selfish and greedy robber barons because they built and grew successful businesses, employ and give livelihood to tens of thousands of people and give hundreds of millions to charity and humanitarian causes. What’s wrong with you???
‘…To be sure, the Kochs have given ‘more than a hundred million dollars to right wing causes’ (which is their right, by the way). But in the last decade, it’s also worth noting the Kochs have given more than $600 million in pledged or donated money to arts, education, and medical research, including (but not limited to):
New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell: $15 million / M.D. Anderson Cancer Center: $25 million / The Hospital for Special Surgery: $26 million / Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: $30 million / Prostate Cancer Foundation: $41 million / Deerfield Academy: $68 million / Lincoln Center’s NY State Theater: $100 million / Massachusetts Institute of Technology: $139 million…’
I beg you people, please wake up and realize that you live in the real world with real problems and real evil doers. There are leaders of nations that what nothing more than your demise and destruction if only economical. You support a president that ( placing all other disagreements and opinions aside ) chooses to bring our country, your families, friends and children to that eventuality of economical downfall.
DO YOU NOT REALIZE that national debt much like your personal debt can and will destroy the country same as your home and family.
HOW CAN YOU dismiss endless examples though out history including recent events and assume that somehow this nation of ours is immune to the same economic laws and results.

Laura says
The Koch brothers started the group Americans for Prosperity, an organization whose goal is ‘advancing every individual’s right to economic freedom and opportunity’. I think it is safe to say that all Americans would be in support of this, as I’d assume everyone would like the chance to build a positive and economically solid future for themselves and their families. However, I urge everyone who has written that the Koch brothers and their companies/investments are validated by the right they have as Americans to turn a profit and put their money behind what they believe in, to look at the recent events in Wake County. The public schools in this area of NC are known for excellent academic achievements and an extremely diverse student body. However, when school board elections rolled around, the Koch brothers were funding the election campaigns of the four new board members who ended up getting hired. These new members had a new agenda for Wake County: to stop bussing students to these diverse schools, and focus on neighborhood schools, which essentially was resulting in re-segregation of the public schools due to the concentration of minority students in certain neighborhoods. The community fought back and ended up having these four members kicked off the school board. This is just one of the many examples of how the Koch brothers and their affiliates are impacting more than just the economic state of our country. Yes it is important that companies turn a profit, yes it’s important that they employ and create jobs, yes companies should be able to invest money where they see fit. But I don’t see HOW you could possibly say that there is nothing wrong with what the Koch brothers are doing, when you hear of news like this. Perhaps some of you are lucky enough to live in affluent areas where you don’t have to look at coal plants burning in your backyard, or can afford to send your children to private schools so you don’t have to worry about issues of re-segregation. But I urge you to look at both sides of the story. Those who are trying to bring light to the issues that have arisen as a result of the Koch brothers industries’ actions should not be dismissed as utopian hippies who want to end all economic growth. Personally, I think this small example comes down to the fact that I just can’t trust someone who has a clear connection with attempting to reverse something as basic as civil rights. Luckily Wake County was able to see through this and fight back to ensure that their civil rights were not taken away. If this change had been made, students in the poorer areas would not have access to the higher academic programs and better teachers that would allow them to get into better colleges and pursue economic prosperity of their own. So, my response to those of you who say the Koch brothers haven’t hurt anyone, please look further into the extensive array of issues that have risen around them. Educate yourself on both sides of these stories, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but please don’t assume that those who are sharing what they have learned are out to attack prosperity and the American Dream.
Barbara says
It seems that the Koch Brother’s own the United States. Now I know why they are against environmental laws and human rights. Don’t get me wrong I am pro capitalism but in the United States it gets out of hands. Greed! It is greed over common sense. Who is really in charge of the US? And it is a shame that so many politicians are jumping on the band wagon. Those politicians are the executive arm of the Koch Brother’s. I know there is no justice in the world but for a country who calls itself the greatest country in the world, there is a lot of corruption and bribing going on. And the sore losers are the average american people.

just so you know, this is just a rumor, there is no truth to it : ) I am completely for him being tried for what he has done, he should be punished, but I always check my facts before jumping on the bandwagon to boycott a place or believing what I read on someone’s FB page. https://twitchy.com/2012/04/19/false-rumor-koch-brothers-are-paying-george-zimmermans-legal-fees/

I don’t use these products too much but now regardless of a sale I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANY OF THEM AT ALL. Stock holders be prepared
Tanja H. Mims says
These are some of the products that I normally purchase,, but if they are in support of wrong doing, and feel that it is justifiable to kill an unarmed teen who was only trying to get home safely, I truly feel that it would be a crime to use these products in my household.
Eddie Velasquez says
Boycott this company products!!!
Sheena Melrose says

Nancy Burrows says

I normally buy your products but while you support the murder of a teenager . I will not buy your products. The autopsy Dr stated that the youngman had no marks on his young hands that went along with this killers statement. Give you carrying a gun is a right to protect yourself and family not to Kill a Child for wearing a hoodie and carring skittles and talking on a phone while walking in the rain. SHAME ON you

Shame on you… why take an interest in this man or his case ? If he was brave enough to approach and murder an unarmed teenager( after the police dispatcher TOLD HIM NOT TOO), who was just walking down the street minding his own business and the next minute his DEAD. What if this was YOUR CHILD. I think about that everyday. DO NOT BUY KOCH PRODUCTS….
Sandra says
You people should really do your research…this company is NOT paying for Zimmerman’s defense. REALLY??? WTF do you think some random company would do that for??? People please use your dang brains for once.
