The refineries produce a wide range of transportation fuels for motorists, truckers and the airline industry. In the olefins plants, the company processes natural gas liquids into ethylene and propylene. In the polymers plants, those two products are processed into various forms of olypropylene, which are key ingredients in products such as consumer and healthcare products, packaging and other plastic products. In the aromatics plant, products produced during the crude oil refining process become xylenes, cumenes and other light products. Those products are the building blocks for many other chemicals and plastics.” Source: fhrstage.fhr.com/ehs/certifications.aspx

According to the International Forum on Globalization, Charles and David Koch are America’s single largest source of private money for attacks against environmental protections. They have spent over $643 million to block or rollback legal protections for clean air, clean energy, clean water, and other environmental issues through sketchy scientific research, lobbying lawmakers, contributing to electoral candidates’ campaigns, media manipulation, etc. Source: kochcash
Petroleum coke (a byproduct of tar sands refining) has been irritating numerous residents in both Chicago and Detroit. Koch Carbon is storing enormous quantities of petroleum coke on the banks of Chicago’s Calumet River and Michigan’s Detroit River. A routine aerial inspection found Koch Pipeline Co. spilled 400 gallons of crude oil in Texas in late October, 2013.
Environmental Charges Against Koch
November, 2014: the city of North Pole, Alaska filed suit against refinery owner Flint Hills Alaska Resources: “During the times that the defendants owned or operated the refinery, the defendants caused or allowed numerous and/or continuous releases of hazardous substances into the groundwater located beneath the refinery, and failed to contain or remediate the hazardous substances,” the lawsuit states. “Ultimately, these hazardous substances have migrated off the refinery property and have contaminated the groundwater down gradient of the refinery and within the city, including wells owned by the city and supplying drinking water to the city’s inhabitants. The presence of sulfolane contamination in the city’s groundwater has rendered that groundwater unfit for human consumption and endangers the public health or welfare, or fish, animals, vegetation or any other part of the natural habitat in which it is found,” the lawsuit states. Source: newsminer.com
December 2006: Flint Hill Resources fined nearly $16,000 by the EPA for 10 separate violations of the Clean Air Act at its Alaska oil refinery facilities, and required to spend another $60,000 on safety equipment needed to help prevent future violations. yosemite.epa.gov
May 2001: Koch Industries paid $25 million to the federal government to settle the federal lawsuit that found the company had improperly taken more oil than it had paid for from federal and Indian land. A federal jury found that Koch Industries had stolen oil from government and American Indian lands and had lied about its purchases more than 24,000 times. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
September 2000: A federal grand jury in Corpus Christi, Texas returned a 97-count indictment against Koch Industries Inc., Koch Petroleum Group for violating federal clean air and hazardous waste laws, due to the release of at least 91 metric tons of uncontrolled, untreated carcinogenic benzene. In April 2001, the company reached a $20 million settlement in exchange for admitting to covering up environmental violations at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. Source: justice.gov
March 2000: Koch petroleum which operates a refinery in Rosemount, Minn., was sentenced to pay a $6 million criminal fine and pay an additional $2 million in remediation costs. This is the largest federal environmental fine ever paid in Minnesota. Koch admitted that it negligently discharged 200,000 – 600,000 gallons of aviation fuel into a wetland and an adjoining waterway. In addition, their way of recovering the fuel (a year and a half later) destroyed a portion of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitat. In a separate offense, Koch dumped a million gallons of wastewater with high ammonia content on the ground between November 1996 and March 1997 and also increased its flow of wastewater into the Mississippi River on weekends when no one monitored discharges. These actions allowed Koch to circumvent the weekly monitoring and reporting requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota. January 2000: Koch Pipeline agreed to a $35 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the State of Texas as fines for the firm’s three hundred oil spills (300 million gallons) in Texas and five other states going back to 1990. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
August 1996: Koch’s Sterling butane pipeline had a leak in Lively, Texas, on August 24, 1996. Two teenagers on the way to report the leak drove into the unseen butane cloud, and were killed when the gas exploded and burned. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that severe external pipeline corrosion was the cause of the failure. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

Koch Brothers Oppose Electric Cars
This report from the show The Young Turks explains that the Koch Brothers are backing a new organization trying to stop the rising tide of electric vehicle adoption. This would hurt petroleum producers like the Koch Brothers. The group is likely to run ads attacking the subsidies given to electric cars.

Thank you Koch brothers.

It is not a monopoly of a specific business, rather a monopoly of all things that bring in profit. At some point a company diversifies beyond what is normal. I can see a bike company diversifying and making sprockets, but not pasta sauce also. Laws need to define this.
If the koch bros were split into 1000 smaller independent companies, they would provide more jobs and carry less power to bully or puppet our governing officials.
I hope some fox newsers actually read this and decide to understand it. But I’m sure I will be judged on my punctuation instead of my content.
Andrew says
I have been waiting on a transplant for over three years. WOW….what for…koch bros—we are stuck on a rock spinning in outer space…this is all you can come up with for intelligence?

Why exactly do you ‘progressive’ numbskulls fear a rich person? Because you have less and that is inherently unfair? Work harder. Innovate. Be successful. Do you socialist morons also fear the socialist Hugo Chavez? He owns most of a country. Do you fear the socialist Soros? You are useful idiots for your Democrat party leaders.
DAN, CA says
Thanks Koch Brothers! Your companies employ a lot of people and produce great products for us consumers. The real test is if someone buys your product because they like it. You are doing great.

75To ‘Thinker’ and others like him. We know the Koch Bros have an army of bloggers that go on these websites to make it SEEM as though they have supporters. Also, ever wonder why one out of every hundred children now has autism? Most likely our polluted environment. We are pathetic when we can’t even keep carcinogens out of baby bottles. The Kochs are evil. They have to supporters.
Stalwart says
Okay, the Koch founder worked in the U.S.S.R. under Stalin’s reign and learned to hate Communism. He came back to America and built a successful company. He has created jobs & unfortunately cut corners, and there has been a history of environmental pollution. So they haven’t been the poster child for Capitalism and totally responsible commerce. What they have done is supported Democracy. I believe that that trumps Socialism which the Democratic party is pushing. They and Herman Cain have supported the Horatio Alger, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps philosophy which has made the United States great and unique. When you realize that another person believes the same things you believe that person is your brother. Only an idiot could argue that point.
Independent1 says
Maybe the Koch brothers can appoint Herman
Cain sheriff of their wild west ranch they are building in Aspen.
Barb berger says
I have seen the future. A planet robbed of natural resources; water shortages; global warming. Oh, and don’t bother looking for a job…we have none here anymore! And then hear those telling you to ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’. Isn’t that what my GRANDPARENTS did? Isn’t that what my PARENTS did? Where did the American Dream go? These guys STOLE it from us. They SOLD US OUT. I can only pray that with all their wealth and power they die alone and unloved. That’s about as much as I can do about this whole wretched situation. The deck is stacked against us.

Krugman says
Economics 101 tells us that an industry imposing large costs on third parties should be required to “internalize” those costs — that is, to pay for the damage it inflicts, treating that damage as a cost of production. No industry should be held harmless from its impacts on the environment and the nation’s infrastructure.
Yet what the (coal/oil/gas & chemical) industries and its defenders demand is, of course, precisely that it be let off the hook for the damage it causes.’ Paul Krugman (And most of that damage is long-term and currently hidden – but it will rear its head. And then we will all be sorry – Tea Partiers included.)

These asshats are rigging everything to produce more profits for themselves. They buy politicians to reduce regulations so that they may pollute more freely. They are actively trying to destroy any opposition so that their corpocracy may flourish. This is the people’s land not Koch industries land. We must all coexist. I defend their right to run their businesses, but not to make profits are our expense. I want clean air, water, fair wages for labor. They must be stopped.

do the GP companies manufacture any private label/store brand products? is there a database that might give this information?
Keiren says
It is a gamble you take every time you buy gasoline. Has this gasoline been refined at a Koch plant or has it run through a Koch pipeline? Gasoline is gasoline until a company sticks a label on it. No company makes it easy to trace. Same as the asphalt you drive on, cement you walk on, or the box your amazon order came in, probably Koch. I know the Kochs sell to private labels/store brands but this info is not easily had. I have looked long and have yet to find. A retailer can manufacture goods under its own label, re-brand private label goods, or outsource the manufacture of store-brand items – often to the same manufacturers that produce the brand-labeled goods. One way to find out would be to inquire at the store as to the source of their store brand or buy only labels/brands you know are independent of the Kochs.

I’m going to try not to support these guys, but from the list, it seems clear that the only real way to effect them is to bring about some pressure from elected officials via changed laws such as what FDR did, and the likely hood of that given the cowards that rule now is next to ZIP.
Nina Miller says
Do they own Target stores?
Keiren says
No, Koch Industries does not own the Target Corporation. It does appear that Target does like to donate to Republicans though: #1 donor to Michele Bachmann. But Target is different from the Kochs in that it is a publicly held corporation that generously donates around 5 percent of its pre-tax operating profit — a large part of that money goes to public schools and the communities in which it operates. Although of course there are many issues with big box stores, but another topic.

Forbes Mag quote says
Robert Lenzner, Forbes: Capital gains are the key ingredient of income disparity in the US — and the force behind the winner takes all mantra of our economic system. If you want to even out earning power in the U.S, you have to raise the 15% capital gains tax. Income and wealth disparities become even more absurd if we look at the top 0.1% of the nation’s earners — rather than the more common 1%. The top 0.1% — about 315,000 individuals out of 315 million — are making about half of all capital gains on the sale of shares or property after 1 year; and these capital gains make up 60% of the income made by the Forbes 400.

To those wonderfully bright, all knowing, progressive conservatives–
First off, let me just say how right you are, you have OPENED my eyes. All liberals are stupid and should be shot by O’reiley, then eaten by Ann Coulter. It is clearly every man’s right to own the entire world and then rule it how he pleases. Liberals, like myself, hate freedom. You’re correct in thinking I’m a socialist. I am. I also fear rich people and their ability to purchase things. That whole exchanging money for goods is TERR-I-FY-ING! It’s also a wonderful thing that you hate the environment because we’ll probably live in space soon anyways. Pollution isn’t because of you guys! Pollution exists because God said in Bible that all those who are liberals will feel God’s wrath…that’s what’s happening.
