According to the International Forum on Globalization, Charles and David Koch are America’s single largest source of private money for attacks against environmental protections. They have spent over $643 million to block or rollback legal protections for clean air, clean energy, clean water, and other environmental issues through sketchy scientific research, lobbying lawmakers, contributing to electoral candidates’ campaigns, media manipulation, etc. Source: kochcash
Petroleum coke (a byproduct of tar sands refining) has been irritating numerous residents in both Chicago and Detroit. Koch Carbon is storing enormous quantities of petroleum coke on the banks of Chicago’s Calumet River and Michigan’s Detroit River. A routine aerial inspection found Koch Pipeline Co. spilled 400 gallons of crude oil in Texas in late October, 2013.
Environmental Charges Against Koch
November, 2014: the city of North Pole, Alaska filed suit against refinery owner Flint Hills Alaska Resources: “During the times that the defendants owned or operated the refinery, the defendants caused or allowed numerous and/or continuous releases of hazardous substances into the groundwater located beneath the refinery, and failed to contain or remediate the hazardous substances,” the lawsuit states. “Ultimately, these hazardous substances have migrated off the refinery property and have contaminated the groundwater down gradient of the refinery and within the city, including wells owned by the city and supplying drinking water to the city’s inhabitants. The presence of sulfolane contamination in the city’s groundwater has rendered that groundwater unfit for human consumption and endangers the public health or welfare, or fish, animals, vegetation or any other part of the natural habitat in which it is found,” the lawsuit states. Source: newsminer.com
December 2006: Flint Hill Resources fined nearly $16,000 by the EPA for 10 separate violations of the Clean Air Act at its Alaska oil refinery facilities, and required to spend another $60,000 on safety equipment needed to help prevent future violations. yosemite.epa.gov
May 2001: Koch Industries paid $25 million to the federal government to settle the federal lawsuit that found the company had improperly taken more oil than it had paid for from federal and Indian land. A federal jury found that Koch Industries had stolen oil from government and American Indian lands and had lied about its purchases more than 24,000 times. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
September 2000: A federal grand jury in Corpus Christi, Texas returned a 97-count indictment against Koch Industries Inc., Koch Petroleum Group for violating federal clean air and hazardous waste laws, due to the release of at least 91 metric tons of uncontrolled, untreated carcinogenic benzene. In April 2001, the company reached a $20 million settlement in exchange for admitting to covering up environmental violations at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. Source: justice.gov
March 2000: Koch petroleum which operates a refinery in Rosemount, Minn., was sentenced to pay a $6 million criminal fine and pay an additional $2 million in remediation costs. This is the largest federal environmental fine ever paid in Minnesota. Koch admitted that it negligently discharged 200,000 – 600,000 gallons of aviation fuel into a wetland and an adjoining waterway. In addition, their way of recovering the fuel (a year and a half later) destroyed a portion of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife habitat. In a separate offense, Koch dumped a million gallons of wastewater with high ammonia content on the ground between November 1996 and March 1997 and also increased its flow of wastewater into the Mississippi River on weekends when no one monitored discharges. These actions allowed Koch to circumvent the weekly monitoring and reporting requirements of its wastewater discharge permit. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and was prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota. January 2000: Koch Pipeline agreed to a $35 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and the State of Texas as fines for the firm’s three hundred oil spills (300 million gallons) in Texas and five other states going back to 1990. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries
August 1996: Koch’s Sterling butane pipeline had a leak in Lively, Texas, on August 24, 1996. Two teenagers on the way to report the leak drove into the unseen butane cloud, and were killed when the gas exploded and burned. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that severe external pipeline corrosion was the cause of the failure. Source: wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_Industries

This report from the show The Young Turks explains that the Koch Brothers are backing a new organization trying to stop the rising tide of electric vehicle adoption. This would hurt petroleum producers like the Koch Brothers. The group is likely to run ads attacking the subsidies given to electric cars.

Koch is not paying for Zimmermans legal fees. This is just a rumor designed to help someone else fulfill their personal agenda. So when you get the phone spam telling you about this…reply to whomever sent it to you with a request for PROOF. The Koch Brothers products, and services should be boycotted before they kill America being one of the top 10 in polution. The buying of universities, like Florida State and most importantly the purchase of the Federal Goverment to make laws that protect them and not us will lead our country down a path we will not be able to recover from.
Valarie G Reynolds says
In the wake of the killing of Trayvon Martin, the Koch company is paying for Zimmerman’s legal fees. They feel he had a legal right to carry a weapon and shoot an innocent person. We are asking that people everywhere unite by passing this information on and boycotting the following Koch prodeucts; Angel Soft Toilet paper, Brawny paper Towels, Dixie paper/plastic products, Mardi Gras paper products, Quilted Northern, Sparkle, Soft & Gentle, Vanity Fair and Zero napkins. I will personally forward this email to the 148 persons on my email list and print 1000 flyers to be distributed in local churches the metropolitan DC area. Valarie Reynolds

Saying Koch is the biggest polluter is like blaming the sun for all the daylight. Maybe we should look at a chart that depicts the number of jobs they have created.

@brian. Except we need sunlight to live; we don’t need pollution, nor do we need to be exploited, by the likes of the Kochs.
They steal oil from individual American Indian families three barrels here, four barrels there. This is well documented, Brian.

Ralph Kramden says
You must understand that boycotting the Cokes is an excercise in futility. All they have to do is sell the companies to a front. Or they may sell the company and buy stock in NYT, Wall St. J, Washington Post, Fox, NBC, etc. Not to mention Obama and Hillary. I do applaud your effort. I suspect that unless we have a certain degree of commotion ala France 1889, Russia 1917, Cuba 1959, nothing will change. What you think?

This issue is terrifying. If your children wore a hood on their head, walked in your neighborhood, would you feel justified if Zimmerman shot and killed your teenager? The answer must be yes, why else would you foot the bill for his legal fees. Thanks, now I can stop using your products, and stop as many people in San Antonio from using them also. Your actions speak louder than his. I hope one day your love ones are protected from people like Zimmerman. I pray that your family does not have to suffer the loss of a child like the Martin family has. I am active NRA member, yet I would not take the law into my own hands. Like Konnie I also want to know what private label brands are made by these human vermin who are he**bent on replacing democracy with deKochracy.
When you buy, say a HomeLife product at many retailers such as Jewel/Osco etc it will just say DISTRIBUTED BY Albertsons, Inc., *not* ‘made by.’ E.g., my Osco Equaline and WalMart Equate shampoos are clearly the identical product, but give no clue as to who makes it, only who it’s made FOR. I’d have to believe the same must be true for say Private Label paper products — could very well be Georgia Pacific in disguise, no? I’d rather gargle with acid than buy anything made by the despicable Kochs.

Thank God for the Koch Brothers. True patriots intent on saving free enterprise and our American way of life. All the rest of you slackers can move to Europe and take your freeloader Obummers with you.

Hi Konnie and Rick,
I have started to investigate Koch ingredients that end up as generic/store labels, but have come to the conclusion that the project could take weeks if not months of mind boggling research, and I bet I would still miss some of the shelf brands. It is really a challenge to find out who the Koch companies sell to. I see that Georgia Pacific frequents trade shows to sell their wares to smaller manufacturers, but once those companies get the goods, it is hard to find out what they do with them if you do not have an inside the company perspective. And the list of generic store brands is huge, so starting from that angle and going backward is out, considering the enormity of products to research. I am sure you see the dilemma, I would love to supply all with that info, but the project would be extremely challenging ending in many uncertainties. You are safest to pick brands you can trust are not Koch. But they will probably we shipped on Koch roads, using Koch gasoline, in Koch boxes. Sorry I could not be of more help. Thx for writing. Best, Keiren

Nothing I saw mentioned the involvment of Koch Industries in the Political Activist Groups that David Koch developed. ‘Citizens For A Sound Economy’, ‘Freedom Works’, and ‘Americans For Prosperity’. He has also commandeered the American TEA Party midstream. These organizations are insidiously designed to hoodwink regular hourly wage type conservatives into becoming lobbyists for Big Business. But, they do not get paid like a lobbyist does. Rather, they pay! These groups ask for cash donations and volunteers. No mention of David Koch’s involvement is mentioned on any of their websites. They promote deregulating corporations. They promote eliminating Corporate taxation. They say it is to stimulate the creation of jobs. They really mean it will provide more profits. And more pollution and death for us.
Mel Serrano says
Koch Industries engages in all of the industries that are the largest polluters of the environment. Oil, mining, logging, textiles, chemicals, paper production, and fertilizers. And they keep expanding, acquiring even more commodity industries. This puts their products into every aspect of human society. with reach like this, it give them incredible influence over the masses. In light of this, of course they would want to influence government. They want to eliminate regulatory agencies like the EPA, OSHA, USDA, and the FDA. They also want to bust all unions, and reduce or eliminate workers rights, by ending Workman’s Comp, Unemployment, overtime pay, and denying recourse to those injured or killed on the job. All these things are bad for American families, yet, they ‘Fly The Flag’, and yell out loud ‘We are Patriots!’. No, they are pure evil.
Phyllis Coelho says
It’s a lethal monster – it’s toxic tentacles reaching out and infecting everyone of us in one way or another!
