There are over 1600 species of bamboo; it’s a fast-growing plant that’s strong and can grow anywhere. Much more sustainable than slow-growing hardwoods.

Square Bamboo.
Grown in west-central Alabama by retired Anglican Bishop, Edward Whatley who read an article which stated that those who practice the Shinto religion in Japan have a single piece of square bamboo in their prayer corner.
Research and reading led Bishop Whatley to discover that the Japanese pioneered the technique of squaring bamboo centuries ago, but they generally stopped making it in the 1920’s.ย Nowhere online or in books could he find anyone who currently squares bamboo. Hence, he set out on a journey to form his own. A Japanese friend took an interest in his project and assisted Bishop Whatley in locating the formula.
So now Bishop Whatley “squares” his own bamboo. He has found that Giant Henon Gray and Vivax, of the 8 varieties he grows, work best, though he is also experimenting with black bamboo (P. nigra).
Last year he built and set out over 100ย frames. This season he will set out some 200 or more frames, with each frame being used 2 or 3 times in the season. Bishop Whatley also makes Harajuku lights and “crooked hiking sticks”.
Why Use Bamboo?
Biologists say that giant timber bamboo sequesters more carbon dioxide than any other plant…
Bamboo’s Age
Less than 30 days – good for eating
6-9 months for baskets
2-3 years for bamboo boards or laminations
3-6 years for construction
After 6 years bamboo gradually loses strength…

For long life, bamboo needs to have its starch content reduced. This is accomplished by first air drying, and then by soaking the poles in water for a few weeks. See: networkearth.org Spanish: bambubrasileiro.com

WOW!!! What an incredible designs, the bamboo chairs in particular blew me away, and the whole bamboo kitchen in Indonesia… I love Bamboo, anything, from bamboo lounge chairs to coffee tables. Bamboo also fits into the beach theme interior design, rustic look etc. etc. But it’s also good for the 1960s hippie look, like these lounge bamboo chairs:

which would look amazing with white & orange bold graphic print cushions, what a statement addition to your room!

We were traveling through Asia during the spring of 2012, when I was still an architecture student. Stopping in Jakarta, we toured many contemporary art galleries which let us in for free due to our jet lagged state. We stumbled upon this object at an exhibition and loved it at first sight. (It seems much more stable than bamboo benches that are just one piece.) Our only regret is that we couldn’t buy it.
