The oceans are important to all of us, even those of us who live far inland. The oceans provide food and other products, transportation routes for international trade, and a chance for relaxation. On a larger scale, the oceans buffer temperatures (both on a regional scale, along the coasts, and on a global scale) and provide much of the oxygen of the atmosphere. World Oceans Day has been unofficially celebrated since 1992. In 2009, the United Nations officially declared June 8 World Oceans Day and it has been getting more participation since then. You can find events near you on the World Oceans Day site. Select a region, then a country from the drop down menu.
