Originally launched on a number of crowdfunding websites last year, the Garden Tower Project‘s self-contained gardening and compost towers are designed to bring healthy, organically-grown produce into people’s homes. The project goes beyond urban gardening, however, and gets right to the core of personal food security.
“To us, food security is more than just growing your own food, it is about growing healthy food. In an era of rapidly rising food prices and industrial farming practices that strip our food of nutrients essential for good health, we believe the Garden Tower is one small step in empowering people towards their own food security.
The Garden Tower gives every person the ability to produce extraordinary amounts of fresh, organic food (in a space of only 4 Square Feet) from any balcony, patio, rooftop, or even yard. Its self fertilizing system even turns your kitchen scraps into compost, and the unique vertical design makes room for up to 50 plants!”
That last part – about the Garden Tower taking kitchen scraps and turning them into the very compost you use in your gardening – is the killer app for this concept. That, of course, and the tiny, 4′ footprint of the tower. Small enough and efficient enough, I think, to make a strong case for its use, even in tiny apartments (or RVs, for you full-timers out there).
You can find out more about the self-contained gardening tower concept in the company’s official KickStarter video, above, and get a sense of how quickly the Garden Tower gets to work for you in the photos, below (note: these are from the company’s site, so, maybe, take these with a pinch of salt). Enjoy!
