Scotland Opens Marine Energy Park

Orkney

The Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Marine Energy Park opened earlier this week. Scotland’s first designated zone for the development of wave and tidal energy will bring together industry and universities to research and develop renewable energy.

Six wave and five tidal projects will developed in the new marine energy park. Scotland already has a number of marine energy devices in operation and the universities have research and development centers to provide support to the renewable energy sector.

Scotland set a renewable energy goal of 100% of the nation’s power needs by 2020. To encourage technological innovation, the Saltire Prize was set up to offer 10 million pounds to the group that produces a minimum of 100 Gwh over a two year period using wave or tidal energy. While marine power is only one part of the overall energy plan, tidal power is estimated to produce 27 GW and be worth about $23 billion to the economy by 2050.
