This post is part of a series from our sister site, Ecopreneurist, where Krates Ng (co-founder of PlantMyPhonecellphone recycling) interviews fellow ecopreneurs. Today, Krates interviews Andrew Naber of Food Sprout. If you are what you eat, then Food Sprout tells you where your food comes from and how it was grown and raised.
1) Why did you start your company?
I started Food Sprout after realizing our food supply has reached an unhealthy and unsustainable level and felt that I had to do something about it. After seeing the movie Food, Inc. it was in my face that big corporations wanted to mask where our food came from. What better way to make food transparent than to create an open web of information on our food supply. This is what lead me to start Food Sprout.
2) Is there a story about the name of your company?
Yes, when I initially started the project I started with a list of hundreds of names of companies. I knew I wanted the name to convey the beginning and the source since we are trying to uncover our source of food. This lead to the name Food Sprout as most our food starts from seeds sprouting.
3) What was the toughest challenge in getting your company started and how you got over that?
The toughest challenge has been speed of development. In my mind and on paper I have a fully baked idea that I can envision when it is 100% complete. I just have to be patient and let the project unfold which can be difficult in the competitive world and speed the Internet moves in.
4) Can you describe the moment when you knew that your company hit full stride as a business?
I am not certain we are there yet, the horizon looks promising. When we talk to people and they learn about our endeavors and goals to make food transparent it instantly clicks with them. We all eat, we all want healthy food and if we can get the information to make the choices to support that all the better.
5) If you had to pick one product or service in your lineup, which one would you showcase and why?
It would have to be our web based platform as that is our main product. We designed it specifically for consumers and businesses. On the consumer side we want to connect you to your food and help you support sustainable food if that is important to you. For businesses we also want to help consult and leverage our data to improve your business and gain more customers interested in supporting local sustainable food.
6) How is your company going to grow in 2011? And how can other ecopreneurs help?
Our growth will be two fold. As we gain awareness in the consumers mind via interviews such as this, word of mouth and our own marketing efforts we expect this to also spill over to small businesses. In the end we want to help small restaurants and food manufactures become more sustainable. The best way other ecopreneurs can help is with introductions to food related businesses and organizations that are willing to share data.
