Ebola 2014: Solon, Ohio Closes Schools Amid Ebola Fears

Schools close in Texas and Ohio due to fears that 2 students and an Ohio district staffer were on the same Frontier airlines plane as Ebola-infected nurse.

Schools in parts of Texas and the suburbs of Cleveland, OH are closed today, following school authorities’ discovery that a staff member from the Solon school district was on the same Frontier airlines plane as Amber Joy Vinson, the Dallas nurse who has tested positive for Ebola.

The CDC claims that the Ohio school district staffer is not at significant risk of carrying Ebola or spreading to the district’s school children, but it seems like most of the parents and school officials who were interviewed by the New York Times, for example, support the proactive safety measures taken by the Ohio school district.

“We made the decision to close Solon Middle and Parkside … out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students and staff,” Solon district officials said in an email to the local Fox News affiliate. “We will stay in close communication with local public health authorities moving forward and our staff member will not be at work during the self-monitoring period to ensure she is asymptomatic before returning to school. There was no public health recommendation to close the schools and we do not believe there is a risk to our students and staff.”

What do you guys think? Is this the right move to keep our kids safe from the Ebola virus, or is this just a bunch of wild fear-mongering to take our attention off of Dow’s airline tumble and the mid-term elections? Strap on your tin hat and let us know what’s up in the comments section. Enjoy!
